A permanent and unobstructed means of access to elevator machine rooms and overhead machinery spaces shall be provided and maintained. The machine room door was blocked by material being stored directly in front of it when we arrived for the inspection.

Machine room keys shall be kept on the premises in a location readily accessible to elevator personnel. The keys weren't on site and took more than an hour to locate.

Where sprinklers are located in the bottom of the hoistway (the pit), fire detection devices shall be installed in the pit in accordance with Chapter 17. NFPA 72 - 21.3.7(2). Smoke detectors shall not be installed in elevator pits to initiate elevator recall unless the smoke detector is listed for the environment. NFPA 21.3.8. If ambient conditions prohibit installation of automatic smoke detection, other automatic fire detection shall be permitted. Note: The heat detector in the pit shall be replaced with an automatic fire detection device designed to work in wet areas.

A17.1 Interpretation 10-1496 - The sump control shall not be located in the elevator hoistway or in any elevator machinery spaces. If no suitable place is available, a variance with the State of Missouri can be applied for.
